Frequently Asked QuestionsHere's a list of questions I've gotten asked in the past, and my answers to them! The questions are listed under specific categories for easy reading. ColoringWhat type of coloring program do you use? This is by FAR the most common question, and the answer is Paint Tool Sai, bby~ It's great and easy to learn how to use if you're just starting out with digital art - or even if you've been coloring for years. The brushes are very pretty and you can blend colors very smoothly. The downside of its simplicity is that there's not many effects or tweaking available, so if you're looking for patterns, effects, filters, you won't find them in Sai. Do you use a tablet?Yes. It's a Wacom Bamboo. I used a mousepad to color when I just started out and it was tough as hell. The moment I switched to a tablet, things started looking at lot more dazzling. You can probably see the difference in my art from pre-November, 2010 to post-November, 2010 pictures since that's when I started using my tablet. Another thing: If you're just starting to learn how to use a tablet, don't expect things to be beautiful right away. Give it a few pictures before you get the hang of using it because it IS awkward at first - I'm just saying this because I know people who had high expectations starting out and got frustrated with the tablet before ragequitting it altogether. Trust me, your gorgeous future art will thank you for your patience. Do you draw everything straight onto the computer or do you scan lineart and color?Everything is sketched and colored straight onto the computer, so it's all digital. I find it much easier to tweak and fix things that way. What's your drawing process like?Whoa, boi. This is a loaded question. It goes something like this: 1. I either have an idea in mind or I stumble across a pretty picture or photo that inspires me. I open up my Sai program and draw a rough sketch. 2. By rough, I mean rough. Sometimes fingers, legs, and arms are missing. 3. First, I make a new layer over the sketch layer and set it on Multiply. I pick a very pale color and Bucket tool the whole layer. Then I throw some highly desaturated colors on it all the while using the bg color as the base. 4. I make about 2-5 new layers set to Overlay. I use Bucket tool on each layer with a different color for each one. How do I pick the colors for these layers? Uuhhhmm, I actually have no process for this. Just pick random colors, Bucket tool, and SEE WHAT HAPPENS. The result is sometimes beautiful but most of the time looks poopy. I tweak, tweak and tweak with the colors until things start looking good. (Do you see why doing a tutorial for my art style would be useless? I have nothing to say on color-choosing except "OVERLAY LAYERS AND EXPERIMENTATION." 5. The result is a colored rough sketch. The next stage is fixing. I hate working with a lot of layers, so I merge all the layers at this point and start the "TWEAKING PHASE." It lasts about 5-25 hours. It consists of: Crayon brush, Blur tool, Pen Tool, repeat. I only work with those three brushes, btw. 6. After a gajilion hours and lots of reference pictures I find on Google images (I look up refs for everything from noses to arms to shoes to jeans to bed frames) - I'm done. It's an amazing feeling, and although not everything is still perfectly blended and beautiful, I choose a stopping point, or else I'd work forever until each pixel looked perfect. That's my process in a nutshell! How much time does it take to draw a picture?Again, this highly depends on the complexity. I'd say: About 5 hours for something like this. About 10 hours for something like this. About 20 hours for something like this. About 30+ hours for something like this. It used to take me a lot longer before, so I don't do that much 30+ stuff anymore. It probably averages to 10-20. The story behind the username taemanaku:It's pretty simple, really, but I still like it almost 8 years later. I came up with it when I was thirteen, and was enamored with the song "Dearest" from Inuyasha. The word featured in the context of the lines: "Douka sono egao ga/Taemanaku aru you ni" or "That smiling face will/Have to stay with me without fail." Without even knowing what the word meant, I immediately picked "taemanaku" as a username for myself, and later found that it meant "incessantly." I thought this described me pretty well. I'm a person who falls hard for things - obsesses hard that is, and my passions are incessant. It worked out even better that people gave me the nickname Tae of their own volition since Taemanaku was a mouthful, and that's what I've called myself online ever since! -- Well, the more you know, haha...!
